SPAIN: PM, US EMBASSY AMONG LETTER BOMB TARGETS

Europe was rocked by the news of return of letter bombs by terrorist organizations when multiple improvised explosive parcels were disarmed by Spanish authorities. Unknown terrorists targeted Spanish political leadership along with the embassies of the US and Ukraine. At least 3 Spanish government organizations along with a weapon company were also targeted.

Spanish Deputy Minister for internal affairs, Rafael Perez, disclosed the existence of parcel bombs while talking to media earlier on Thursday. He said that the letter bombs received by 5 other offices, including the embassy of Ukraine located in Madrid, a local arms company and three government institutions. He also disclosed that these parcels were dispatched from within the country.

“It appears that they were all sent from within the country, but we are basing this on early visual inspections without yet having an in-depth technical report,” he elaborated to media.

The case of Spanish arms company, Instalaza located in Zaragoza, northeastern Spain, is very interesting. One of the major products of this company is C90 rocket launcher that Spain has supplied to Ukraine. The Instalaza C90 is a 90 mm disposable infantry weapon system. It is an easy to operate shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher which is being used as anti-armor or anti-personal roles. The operational capability of this weapon system can be enhanced by fitting it with night-vision devices such as VN38-C NVD. This enhancement provides the weapon a complete night fighting capabilities. After these incidents all fingers are naturally being pointed towards Russian involvement in these intended parcel attacks.

Spanish Security personnel in front of US embassy in Spain

More news emerged Yesterday from Spanish authorities adding more credence to these suspicions against Russia. For example the Spanish security forces has claimed to find a device early on Thursday in an envelope mailed to a European Union satellite center located at an air force base in Torrejon de Ardoz, near Madrid. This news came from the Spanish Ministry of Defense. Spain is part of NATO and is actively engaged in Ukraine conflict.

US embassy has also confirmed the reception of these parcels. “We can confirm a suspicious package was received at the US Embassy in Madrid.”, said US embassy in response to media inquiry about the matter. “We are grateful to Spanish law enforcement for their assistance with this matter,” the statement added.

While revealing about the nature of explosive devices in these parcels, the Spanish ministry of interior said, “an “envelope with pyrotechnic material” was sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez which was received on November 24 and disarmed by his security team.”

On the other hand, Russia has issued a strong statement in this matter.

“Any threat or terrorist act, particularly directed at a diplomatic mission, are to be totally condemned,” the Russian statement said.

Spain’s High Court has opened an investigation, according to a judicial source.
