40 Killed in Tajik-Kyrgyz Border Clash

Over 40 people have died in the ongoing Tajik-Kyrgyz border clash. This clash is fast spiraling out of control as number of fatalities are on the rise.  This is a serious escalation of an episode that began as a dispute over irrigation water. What began with rock throwing between Tajiks and Kyrgyz in villages along the border escalated into an exchange of small-arms fire between border guards and other security forces.

The fresh round is disturbing because it took place after Presidents from both countries have agreed on a ceasefire and a follow-up meeting on Friday after talking to each other on phone.

Another interesting dynamic of this clash is its timing. According to NYTimes’ Andrew E. Tajik-Kyrgyz border clash has been alarmed in many countries in the region and the world. Diplomatic efforts from Turkey are underway to deescalate the situation.
